| Basically anyone who considers himself/herself as a "fan" to anything has less credibility. I think the argument "fandom is trash" comes from that to some extent. The word "fan" is used so lightly nowadays. "Fan" used to refer to a person who is unconditionally attached to something. "I am a fan of Code Geass" actually means you have an unflinching desire or even compulsion to defend it despite its flaws and get toxic when problems are pointed out with it. But these days people say they are fans of something they just like. I think from what little I have seen, both anime and video game fans are alike in this aspect. What an uproar is going on with games like Diablo Immortal and Fallout 76. "Fans" buy $200 tickets to a conference in which a company tells you what games you will get to buy in the future. "Fans" buy $200 collectors editions of trash games containing a bag and a helmet thats irrelevant to the quality of the game. Being a "fan" of anything and supporting something blindly is what is ruining quality. People dont remember the fact that liking something and being a "fan" are two different things |
